Marjory Bruce

Title:
Princess
Dates:
Born 1294, died c. 1317

The daughter of Isobel of Mar and Robert I, Marjory Bruce was captured soon after her father seized the throne of Scotland. Edward I ordered that she be confined to a cage in the Tower of London but later allowed her to move as a captive to the Gilbertine nunnery of Watton in Yorkshire. She was released in 1314 following the battle at Bannockburn and married Walter Stewart the same year.

It was agreed that she would inherit the crown if both her father and his brother Edward died without male heirs, but she died in c.1317 giving birth to the future Robert II, the first of the Stewart monarchs. She was buried in Paisley Abbey.
