Mariote Ker

Dates:
fl. 1500s

Mariote Ker was made a burgess of the Royal Burgh of Dundee on 12 November 1529, at the request of the young king, James V. The reason for this is not known, but it would have given her an important place in the business world at the time. Burgesses held monopolies in the production of goods including bread, beer and cloth. She was Dundee’s first woman burgess. The city’s second woman burgess was appointed 360 years later.
