Jeannie Robertson was born in Aberdeen of travelling folk. She spent much of her childhood in Deeside and Perthshire, where she acquired a vast repertoire of traditional music. She married Donald Higgins. She was "discovered" during the Scottish Folk Song Revival of the 1950s. She was made an MBE in 1968 for her contribution to Scottish traditional music and in recognition of her international fame.
