Eleanor was born on 7th July, 1796 and baptized on 5th Aug 1796 at Inveresk with Musselburgh, Scotland.

Her parents were Francis Charteris-Wemyss-Douglas, Earl of Wemyss of Gosford House, Haddington, East Lothian, Scotland (born 15 Apr 1772, died 28 Jun 1853 at Gosford House) and Margaret Campbell of Shawfield, Rutherglen, Lanarkshire, Scotland (born around 1778, died 25 Jan 1850 at Gosford House). They married on 31 Aug 1794.

She had 2 brothers and 7 sisters, including Caroline who has a wing of the Royal Sick Children's Hospital named after her (Charteris Wing), and a memorial plaque on the wall there erected by another sister Jane (Lady Dundas).

On 14th January 1820 ‎she became the first wife. of Walter Frederick Campbell. In 1821 he founded the village of Port Ellen (shortened from Eleanor) at Bay on the Isle of Islay in the Inner Hebrides, naming it after her.

Eleanor died on 16th September, 1832 and is buried at Bowmore Round Church in a marble sarcophagus made by David Hamilton and son, architects of the lighthouse he commissioned that year in her memory at Carraig Fhada at Kilnaughton Bay, opposite Port Ellen. Above the door is an inscription in her memory:

YE WHO MID STORMS AND TEMPESTS STRAY IN
DANGERS MIDNIGHT HOUR.
BEHOLD WHERE SHINES THIS FRIENDLY RAY AND
HAIL ITS GUARDIAN TOWER.
TIS BUT FAINT EMBLEM OF HER LIGHT MY FOND
AND FAITHFUL GUIDE.
WHOSE SWEET EXAMPLE MEEKIN BRIGHT LED
THROUGH THIS WORLDS EVENTFUL TIDE MY HAPPY COURSE ARIGHT.
AND STILL MY GUIDING STAR SHE LIVES IN REALMS
OF BLISS ABOVE.
STILL TO MY HEART BLEST INFLUENCE GIVES AND
PROMPTS TO DEEDS OF LOVE.
TIS SHE THAT BIDS ME ON THE STEEP KINDLE THIS
BEACONS FLAME.
TO LIGHT THE WANDERER O`ER THE DEEP WHO SAFE
SHALL BLESS HER NAME.
SO MAY SWEET VIRTUE LEAD YOUR WAY THAT
WHEN LIFE`S VOYAGE IS O`ER.
SECURE LIKE HER WITH HER YOU MAY ATTAIN THE
HEAVENLY SHORE.
