Alice Ivy Wigmore was born in Australia and moved to the UK when she was twelve. She studied at the Royal College of Music in London and became a distinguished violinist. She married, firstly, Walter Paterson and then, after his death, Malcolm V. Hay. She wrote several books, mostly biographical, and collaborated with her husband to write on Jewish history. Alice Hay owned a house in Israel and spoke fluent Hebrew. The couple collected Hebrew texts, which they bequeathed to the University of Aberdeen. After her husband's death she wrote his biography "Valiant for Truth: Malcolm Hay of Seaton" describing his fight against anti-semitism.
