Mary Esslemont was the daughter of Clementina MacDonald, who was active in many areas of female activism, and George B Esslemont, MP. She gained three degrees from Aberdeen University (B.Sc., MA, MBChB) and was the first female President of the Student Representative Council. She was a GP who was particularly concerned with Aberdeen's poor, and was active in many areas, especially women's rights. She was awarded the CBE in 1955.
