The daughter of William H and Lily Barnes, she was born in Edinburgh in 1922. She was a member of the 41st Girl Guide Unit. Each year on Remembrance Sunday a representative of this unit lays a poppy cross at the memorial. She attended Leith St Paul's church.
On her eighteenth birthday, Madge enlisted in the W.R.N.S (the Wrens) and was sent to Scarborough. In August 1941 a group of Wrens were sent to Gibraltar on board the Aguila, which was sailing as part of a convoy. Their ship was hit by a torpedo fired by a German U-boat, and twelve Wrens, including Madge Barnes, died.
