Born in 1881, she was the eldest child of the minister of Lochee. She married at the age of 21 and had three daughters, Christina, Margaret and Jean. In 1911, the census gives her occupation as "Manageress of Nursing Mother's Restaurant" She helped the police in a voluntary capacity for several years before being appointed to the police force in 1918. Her work focused on women, runaway girls, and liaising with the RSPCC. She worked with the police until 1921. Later she worked as a secretary for the Territorial Army.
