Elizabeth Brodie

Brought up between her family home in Scotland and boarding school in London, Elizabeth Brodie met George, Marquis of Huntly while visiting Bath. The couple married in Bath on 11 Dec 1813. After death of the 4th Duke of Gordon in 1827, the couple became Duke and Duchess of Gordon. After the death of her husband in 1836, Elizabeth moved to Huntly Lodge. Deeply interested in religion, in 1845 she became a member of the Free Church of Scotland. She was a considerable benefactor, contributing to many causes. In particular, she founded the Gordon Schools in Huntly, and was actively involved with the schools, providing an annual treat to all pupils. She died in 1864.
