Elizabeth Violet Blackadder was born in Falkirk in 1931. She went to school there and studied and taught at Edinburgh College of Art. In 1956 she married Scottish Painter John Houston (1 April 1930 – 27 September 2008).

She was appointed an Order of the British Empire in 1982 and promoted to Dame Commander of the British Empire in 2003.
In 2001 she was appointed Her Majesty’s Painter and Limner in Scotland. She holds four honorary doctorates by four universities.

In 2012 she achieved The Edinburgh Award, commemorated on a wooden plaque within, and on a paving slab outside in the courtyard of, the City Chambers.
