Olive Smith

approx 1880 - 24 September 1916

Olive Smith was the daughter of Robert Smith, of Greystone Dale, Haltwhistle.

She trained as a physical education teacher, firstly at Durham College of Science, Newcastle, and then at Mme. Oesterberg’s Physical Training College at Dartford.

In the 1901 census she was a 21 year old teacher of Swedish gymnastics, living in Wolverhampton.

She was living in Glasgow in 1904.

She became head teacher in the Physical Training Department of Glasgow Provincial Centre for Teachers. She also pioneered teaching gymnastics to female convicts in Glasgow, a scheme which was subsequently adopted by other prisons.

She volunteered with the Scottish Women's Hospitals and died of malaria in Serbia. Her home address at the time of her death was 30 Woodcroft Avenue, Glasgow.
