Mary was born on 29th August, 1839 in the Parish of Contin, Ross and Cromarty. Her parents were Henry Ross, a Tenant Farmer at Kinnahaird, near Strathpeffer and Ann McKay.

On 23rd July 1863 Mary married Robert Rowand Anderson (05.04.1834- 01.06.1921), an Edinburgh Architect who was knighted in 1902. Their only child Annie Ross Anderson (born 05.06.1864) died of Typhoid on 14 February 1872 when she was only 8.

Mary spent her life in charitable work in their home village of Colinton in Edinburgh.

Mary died after a short illness on 21st January, 1921 from Broncho Pneumonia, aged 81. At this time they lived in Allermuir House which Rowand has designed, in Woodhall Road, Colinton.

When Rowand died he left a £3000 bequest for a cottage to be built in Colinton as a memorial to her, the Lady Rowand Anderson Memorial Cottage at Thorburn Road, intended to be used by the Colinton District Nurse. This and other cottages in Colinton are now owned and managed by the The Aged Christian Friend Society of Scotland.
