Eleanor Teresa Pearson Armstrong

She was born in 1910, in Canonbie, Dumfriesshire, the daughter of Margaret Davidson and John Armstrong, grocer. She had three sisters and two brothers, the eldest of whom, George, was killed in the First World War, aged 19.
Eleanor Armstrong worked in the City Treasurer's Department, Carlisle, and then at the International Labour Office of the League of Nations at Geneva. She spoke French and German fluently, and a little Spanish. Her hobbies included horse riding, and walking and climbing in the Lake District. When war broke out she was appointed to the post of secretary to the British Minister at Sofia. She was severely injured (losing both legs) when the Pera Palace Hotel, Istanbul was bombed on 11 March 1941 and died of her injuries the following day. She is buried in Ferikoy Protestant Cemetery, Istanbul.
