Chrystal Macmillan
Chrystal Macmillan was born in Corstophine, Edinburgh. She became the first female science graduate from the University of Edinburgh in 1896, as well as the first female honours graduate in Mathematics. She campaigned for women's rights to vote and became the first woman to plead a case before the House of Lords in 1908. As an active pacifist, she was present at the International Women's Congress in The Hague in 1915, and later organised the International Committee for Women for Permanent Peace (ICWPP) and its congress in Zurich. The name was subsequently changed to the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) in 1919. Macmillan was called to the bar in January 1924. She continued to work for the causes close to her heart: the WILPF and IWSA in particular. She died at 8 Chalmers Crescent, Edinburgh, on 21 September 1937.
