Annie Park Kerr

Title:
Sister
Dates:
Born February 12th 1891, Died December 7th 1942

Was born at Knockaneach, Assynt, Sutherland, her parents were Andrew and Margaret Isabella Kerr. She trained as a nurse at the Holborn and Finsbury Hospital,London from 1922 to 1925.

She was a member of the nursing service in the Merchant Navy and is commemorated in the Merchant Navy Roll of Honour at Tower Hill, London.

She was killed when the ship SS Ceramic was hit by one torpedo fired by U-515 in December 1942. The SS Ceramic was about 420 miles west-northwest of the Azores. The ship was part of convoy ON-149 with 264 crew members, 14 gunners, 244 military and naval passengers, 133 fare paying passengers, including 12 children. There was one survivor who was picked up by U-515,the crew and the rest of the passengers drowned.

She is also commemorated on the Assynt War Memorial at Lochinver. On this memorial she is mentioned as a member of the Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service (Q.A.I.M.N.S.), I think that is a mistake, there were at least 27 QAIMNS and 3 TANS on board the vessel but Annie Park Kerr is listed as a crew member and this is where the confusion may lay.
