Annie Mitchell joined the royal household in 1856, initially working for Prince Albert. She moved to the Queen's service as a housemaid and became a wardrobe maid in 1862.

Annie Mitchell married footman John McDonald on 19 September 1863 in Buckinghamshire. Their daughter Victoria Alberta was born the following year. John died of consumption on 1 October 1865.

Annie remained in the royal service, leaving her daughter with her parents in Crathie. She became head dresser to Queen Victoria. She is mentioned in Queen Victoria's diaries many times.

Annie McDonald became ill and died in 1897. Queen Victoria recorded in her diary "Heard on getting up that my good Annie McDonald has passed away early this morning. I am deeply grieved and cannot the least realise that I have lost not only an excellent faithful maid, but a real friend, who was absolutely devoted to me."
