Elsie Alice Dalgarno

Elsie Alice Dalgarno was the daughter of Alexander Dalgarno and Mary Greig. She was born in Aberdeen in 1903.

She qualified as a nurse in 1934 and as a midwife in 1935. She worked in the Armstrong Nursing Home, Aberdeen.

During the Second World War she served in the QAIMNS. She served in Guy's Hospital, London before being sent overseas.

She was killed at sea on the 12th February 1944, when the SS Khedive Ismail was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine in the Indian Ocean.

Janet Scott Portingale

Janet Scott Portingale was born in South Africa, the daughter of William Portingale, civil servant, and Helen Scott McDougall.

She was a pupil at Lenzie Academy, and a member of Lenzie Girl Guides. Her family lived at 164 Woodhead Avenue, Kirkintilloch, and later moved to Canada. She worked at Glasgow Royal Infirmary before volunteering for nursing duties overseas during the Second World War. She joined Queen Alexandra`s Imperial Military Nursing Service. Her service number was 215393.

Her sister Mary also served in the war.

Jessie Elizabeth MacRobbie

The daughter of John and Helen MacRobbie, she was born and raised in Crieff.

Isobel Spence

Isobel Spence was the only daughter of Mr and Mrs John Spence of Waterside, Forbes, Alford. She completed her nurse training at Foresterhill Hospital in March 1942.Sister Spence was reported as Missing at Sea, and then reported as missing, presumed killed by enemy action a month later.

In addition to the Tullynessle War Memorial, her name also appears on the Brockwood Memorial.
