Marjorie Melvill Mitchell

Marjorie Melvill Mitchell was born in Montrose in 1891. She was the daughter of James Mitchell and his wife Agnes Watson, and was the second youngest of a large family. She became a physiotherapist.

She was the third generation to enter local politics as both her grandfather and father served as Provost of Montrose.

She was elected onto the Town Council in 1955 and became Provost in 1971. She was also convenor of Montrose Harbour Board.
She died in 1977, and is buried in Sleepyhillock cemetery, Montrose.

Jean Mackie

Mrs Jean Mackie was a magistrate and was one of the founder members of the Voluntary Association for Mental health. She was Provost of Dunfermline from 1961 to 1964, the first women to hold the post.

Bessie Leith

Bessie Leith was born in Wick, the daughter of Andrew Leith, labourer and Helen Doull. In the 1901 census the family were living at I Mounthooley Lane, Wick.

She was a teacher at Pulteney School, Wick. She became a town councillor and then the first female provost of Wick. She was a member of the Labour party. She was awarded the MBE in the New Years Honours of 1954.
She is buried in the Old Municipal Cemetery, Wick.

Isobel Ann Duncan
