Jacobite
Katherine Duff
Katherine Duff was the daughter and heir of Adam Duff of Drummuir. However, when she inherited the estate it was burdened with debt. The Duff family encouraged her marriage to Alexander Duff, who paid off the debts. Alexander Duff served as M.P. for Inverness. The couple had a large family. Alexander Duff died in 1726. Their eldest son, Robert, was weak-minded, and Katherine Duff managed the estate on her son's behalf.
Lady Drummuir was noted for her charity and carried a purse full of coppers to give to the poor.
Lady Anne Mackintosh
Anne Farquharson was the daughter of Margaret Murray, and John Farquharson of Invercauld. Her husband, Aeneas (Angus), whom she married in 1741, was chief of the clan Mackintosh and a captain in the Black Watch regiment.
She was 22 years old at the time of the 1745 Jacobite Rising. While her husband was away on military service, his wife raised his relatives and tenants in support of Prince Charles Edward Stewart. She handed over command of the 300-strong Lady Mackintosh’s Regiment to her husband’s cousin, Alexander MacGillivray of Dunmaglass.
Jean Cameron
On 19 August 1745, Jenny Cameron rode to the Raising of the Jacobite Standard at Glenfinnan, at the head of 300 Cameron men. Apparently the only woman of rank present at the Raising of the Royal Standard, she is said to have made a gift of cattle to feed the Jacobite army. ‘Bonnie Jean Cameron’ became an instant celebrity, and various far-fetched tales circulated about her.
